Titans face rematch with Portlaoise

Galway Titans Basketeball Club face a double-header in this weekend’s National League action.

First up is a rematch against Portlaoise on Saturday (4pm ) at the NUIG Kingfisher sports - the team they routed last weekend in the National Cup. Then on Sunday they will faceWaterford, also at 4pm, in Renmore.

Titans can expect to pick up valuable league points against Portlaoise after they advanced in the Basketball National Cup with a relatively easy 58 -103 victory on the road in Portlaoise.

That victory sets them up for quarter-final home tie with St Brendan’s, Tralee next month.

Titans opened an 11-point lead in the first few minutes as the Portlaoise zone defence was pulled apart with some great outside shooting. And with Danny Finn and Paul Peldzius tormenting the Portlaoise front court, the Titans pushed home their advantage. Paul Freeman compounded the home team’s misery with his power and athleticism going to the hoop, and despite a 15-minute break due to court condensation, the Galway outfit had stretched the lead to 61 - 35 at half time.

As a result coach Mike Lynch utilised his bench in the second half with Colin Turke, Pat O Neill, Derek Mulveen, and Conal McMichael producing some solid displays. In the final quarter Titans continued the rout to complete a 58-103 victory, marking the third time this season Titans have broken the magic ton.
