The forthcoming closure of the Lackagh Area Office will lead to a serious reduction of services in the Oranmore electoral ward and leave it the only ward in the county without such an office.
This is the view of Independent county councillor Jim Cuddy who has condemned the Galway County Council’s decision to close Lackagh Area Office next March.
“I am very disappointed at the decision to close the office completely as a cost saving measure,” said Cllr Cuddy. “Over the last couple of years there has been a gradual depletion of office and outdoor staff assigned to the Lackagh office. As a result of the closure, residents of the Oranmore Electoral Area have not been able to get an adequate service.”
Cllr Cuddy has been trying to get additional funding from the council for road repairs in the locality but fears that with the office closure this will become more difficult.
“I understand that given the tough economic situation, difficult decisions have to be made, but I don’t believe this decision was the right one,” he said. “It will certainly mean a reduction in services which is bad news for all residents. I am appealing to the county council to reverse this decision.”
