Remand for man charged with hospital tresspass and theft spree

A 38-year-old man accused of embarking on a tresspass and thieving spree at University Hospital Galway over a four-month period and making off with booty worth nearly €2,000 has been remanded on continuing bail.

The Galway District Court heard how Hipolito Seijas Barreiro, with an address given as Monivea Road, Mervue, and Ruislip Manor, Letteragh Road, Rahoon, was arrested and charged on the morning of the court.

Barreiro is charged with numerous counts of allegedly tresspassing and committing thefts from doctors’ offices and other restricted areas at UHG. He is charged with entering Room 2, St Monica’s Ward, and committing the theft of a Calvin Klein wallet worth €70 containing €150 in cash, and a Nokia mobile phone, on December 20, 2010; entering the outpatients unit and committing the theft of €700 cash, as well as entering the medical assessment unit and committing the theft of a Nokia mobile phone valued at €50 and a Nokia touch screen valued at €150 on January 28, 2011; entering the hospital’s main concourse with the intention of committing theft on February 17, 2011; entering St Michael’s Ward and committing the theft of €150 in cash on March 3, 2011; entering the radiotheraphy room and committing the theft of a purse containing €40 cash and entering a doctor’s office at Admissions, Block 2C, UHG, with the intention of committing theft as well as entering the outpatients department and committing the theft of a digital camera worth €600 on March 17, 2011; and entering the high dependency unit at UHG and committing the theft of €90 cash on April 6, 2011.

Further charges of failing to appear in court on June 26, 2011, the theft of a bottle of Bacardi and food items to the value of €20.19 from Dunnes Stores, Westside, on June 1, 2011, and being intoxicated in a public place and being a danger to traffic and to himself at Old Monivea Road on February 19, 2011, were also brought against Barreiro.

The court further heard that the DPP has consented to the matters being dealt with summarily in the District Court. Berreiro was remanded on continuing bail to appear at Galway District Court on February 6 next.
