INTIMATE VOICES, Music For Galway’s annual January festival, promises something quite different, and an unusual and exciting way to start 2012.
It promises something different as the three day event, which takes place from January 20 to 22 in the Town Hall Theatre, will not only appeal to lovers of chamber music, but also to visual artists, dance enthusiasts, jazz fans, and anyone who has ever played or would love to play the saxophone.
The concerts will feature The ConTempo Quartet and Holland’s Amstel Quartet performing music by Mozart, Bach, Arvo Pärt, and Philip Glass; actor Rod Goodall reading love letters by composer Janacek; songs from baritone Gavan Ring; a performance by Galway dancer Judith Sibley; video artist Mihai Cucu is creating three specially commissioned video films to accompany the music each night; and The Chatham Saxophone Quartet will join with the Amstel Quartet to perform a work for eight saxophones by Jan Sweelinck.
Charlie Byrne’s Bookstore will be based in the Town Hall for the weekend, offering a selection of books with a musical theme, and a workshop involving young musicians from Galway will take place in the Town Hall Studio on Saturday afternoon.
Tickets are €20/16/6 from Music for Galway (091 - 705962, [email protected] ), Opus II, or www.tht.ie
