Public lecture on Clonfert monastery

The history of Clonfert, from its foundation as a monastic site in the sixth century to its decline in the 17th century, will be the subject of a public lecture in Galway.

The Galway Archaeological and Historical Society will host a public talk by Dr Christy Cunniffe in The Harbour Hotel, Dock Road, on Monday at 8pm.

In his talk, entitled Medieval Clonfert: The Genesis, Development and Decline of a Gaelic Monastic Settlement, Dr Cunniffe will include examination of the extent of the settlement in the early medieval period using the surviving archaeological and architectural remains; the monastery’s 12th-century reform; and its Romanesque doorway.
