CCTV is stopping littering at bottle bank says McNelis

To combat litter offences at glass bottle bring banks, the Galway City Council will be erecting signs highlighting the use of CCTV around such facilities.

The signs will be installed at all bring bank sites within the coming weeks and the news has been welcomed by Labour city councillor Niall McNelis.

Cllr McNelis said that since a CCTV unit was installed at the Western Distributor Road bottle bank facility last July, illegal dumping “has dropped significantly”.

“Before the cameras there was approximately 20/25 litter offences each week,” he said. “This has been reduced to five to eight per week currently. Those caught on camera are traced by the number plates on the cars.”

He also noted that the presence of CCTV has not deterred people from disposing of their bottles at the bank. The Labour man also said the bottle banks removed from Ravens Terrace will be replaced temporarily at a site in the Claddagh on a trial basis before Christmas.
