People can remember a loved one living or deceased in a unique way this Christmas by sponsoring a light on the Christmas tree at University Hospital Galway.
The initiative is the brainchild of the Children’s Remembrance Day Committee. Lights costing €5 are on sale to the public until December 9 from 8.30am to 7pm at the foyer of the hospital. The organisers advise people to come early to avoid disappointment.
Susan Massey of the Children’s Remembrance Day Committee says the Christmas Tree lights are a “unique gift”.
“A light may be sponsored for a loved one who may be abroad or a relative who sadly may have died. The Christmas card can be sent to their families to let them know we are thinking of them. This year’s Christmas card was designed by Judy Ruane in memory of her niece Bernadette Moran.”
The Christmas tree lights will be switched on on Sunday December 11. All those who are sponsored on lights are included in a triduum of Masses celebrated over the Christmas season at the hospital chapel.
Margaret Duignan, the chairperson of the Children’s Remembrance Day Committee, says the Christmas tree at UHG brings “solace and peace” to patients, staff and visitors to the hospital each year.
