Choose the right gift this Christmas

Without getting into facts and figures it is fairly clear most of us are, to put it delicately, not as well off as we would like to be. With that in mind, this Christmas when it comes to buying gifts make sure they are practical.

Of course being practical does not necessarily mean being boring. If your sister loves to be pampered, buy her a shower wash or body lotion to go with her favourite perfume, or pick up a luxurious hand cream or hair products. This way you are giving her something special, and probably something she would never buy for herself, but at the same time something you know she will get use out of. Similarly if a loved one is planning to get in shape for the New Year, a gift voucher for a leisure club is a great way to get him or her on the road to fitness.

There are plenty of homeware stores in Galway which offer practical yet decorative pieces for all rooms in your home. Picture frames are a great present for family and loved ones, and you can make this present extra special by adding a personal picture, which also saves the recipient the task of picking a picture for the frame. Cocktail glasses are a great gift for anyone who loves to throw a party, or a new cafetiere for the coffee lover along with some homemade ginger nut biscuits. Grow your own herb pots and seeds sets for the wannabe chef are all fun, thoughtful, and practical gifts that can be bought for under €20.

For the younger generations toys are still top of the pile when it comes gift ideas, and you will find all the favourites in the city’s stores to put a smile on their face. If you need something for a baby or toddler you can find a fantastic collection of children’s clothes, as well as a wide range of educational toys for young children. To show someone special just how much he/she means think unique, stunning jewellery or beautiful local crafts.

If all else fails pick up a voucher from a favourite clothes, book, or music shop. It does not have to be for €100, a €20 voucher will go a long way in the post-Christmas sales, or can be saved for buying something special. Or perhaps a voucher towards a meal at a local restaurant would be appreciated; this way you are not only giving a present he/she likes, and supporting local businesses.

Remember to explore your local shops and boutiques for wonderful inexpensive presents. Once-off presents which reflect the personality of the receiver will always be remembered and making them that little bit more practical means you know it is money well spent.

Whatever you are looking for there are plenty of options out there. So delve a little bit deeper into what is available for Christmas gifts with this week’s guide in the Galway Advertiser.
