Galway-based medical technology company Aerogen Ltd has been revealed as contender for the 2011 Medical Technology Company of the Year Award. The shortlist of six companies was announced this week with the overall winner set to be announced at the 2011 Medical Technology Industry Excellence Awards which will take place on December 8 in Limerick.
Aerogen Ltd. is a Galway-based innovative drug delivery company that specialises in the design, manufacture and marketing of aerosol drug delivery systems that are aimed predominately at the global critical care respiratory market.
Now in its fifth year the shortlist for the 2011 Medical Technology Industry
Excellence Awards includes:

• KCI Manufacturing Ireland, Athlone (Westmeath )
• Lake Region Medical Limited, Wexford
• Nypro Healthcare Ireland, Bray (Wicklow )
• Stryker Ireland, Cork
For 2011, the Medical Technology Company of the Year will demonstrate long-term vision with regard to building and financing sustainable business growth. In addition to the overall award, the 2011 excellence awards will also include the IMDA Medical Technology Outstanding Contribution Award. In its second year this award will recognise an individual who has made a significant contribution to the development, growth and success of the medical technology sector in Ireland.
Coinciding with the shortlist announcement, a recent sentiment survey also revealed that approximately half of all medical technology companies in Ireland expect to recruit additional employees during 2012 with four in every ten companies expecting to increase permanent employee numbers before the end of this year according to the latest sentiment survey on the Irish Medical Devices Sector.
The sentiment survey detailed the continued growth of the Irish Medical Devices Sector with 43% of companies detailing they were more profitable than earlier in the year while over half of companies (55% ) revealed that they were more productive, had increased their customer base (50% ) and increased their sales during the quarter (56% ).
Commenting on the positive indicators for 2012, spokesperson for the Medical Technology Excellence Awards, Brian O’Neill, Manager Life Sciences, Enterprise Ireland said: “2011 has been yet another strong year for this dynamic industry where we have seen almost 1,000 new jobs being announced since the beginning of the year. These recent indicators are once again very positive and bode well for the sector in terms of continued revenue and employment growth in the New Year. The 6 companies shortlisted for the 2011 awards are great examples of the world-class excellence and innovative nature of the Irish medical technologies company base”
The Medical Technology Industry Excellence Awards are jointly hosted by Enterprise Ireland, IDA Ireland and the Irish Medical Devices Association. The Irish Medical Devices Association is a business sector within IBEC, the Irish Business and Employers Confederation.
