Remembering Galway’s athletic prowess

A new book on the history of successful Galway athletic club Derrydonnell AC will be launched tomorrow in the Rahoon Woods Hotel, Athenry.

In Their Bare Feet, written by Mick Rice, a member of Athenry AC, tells the story of one of the most celebrated athletics club Galway produced. The club won county, provincial and national championships over a period of nearly 20 years during the 1950s and 60s, and athletes such as Willie Morris, Mick Molloy, Tommy Madden, Kevin Ryan and Willie Cannon gained near legendary standing among followers of the sport, not alone in Galway, but all over the country. Several athletes who ran with the club, including Tommy Madden and Willie Morris, will attend the launch. Master of ceremonies will be Frank Greally of Irish Runner Magazine.
