Loughrea and Athenry students get certs for Chernobyl fundraising

The Transition Year Students of Gairmscoil Mhuire, Athenry and St Raphael’s College, Loughrea, were presented with their certificates from Pat Dillon of the Sunflowers Chernobyl Childrens Charity, for their efforts in raising awareness and money for the Sunflowers Christmas Craft Fair Fundraising Event, which is to be held at the Raheen Woods Hotel on Sunday December 11. The students entered a poster competition, Georgia Dennis Hurlock and Ceire Maher of Gairmscoil Mhuire and Annabel Hynes of St Raphael’s College, were joint winners.

The students wholeheartedly embraced this charity when they heard from Pat Dillon the plight of children, many their own ages in Belarus, affected by the 1986 nuclear disaster. Mr Dillon said that here is simply nowhere for the orphans to go when they reach the age of 18 and many still need medical care. Monies raised from the sale of the stalls will go to the charity. The fair has many attractions such as Irish crafts, award-winning Christmas puddings, award-winning author Benji Bennett-signed editions of his books, a holistic pampering section with tasters, kid’s activities and of course Santa will visit.
