Connacht thank Walsh and Ring for sourcing funding for Sportsground

The stage is set for Connacht to welcome Heineken Cup rugby to Galway for the first time this weekend following a major revamp of The Sportsground on College Road.

On Saturday at 6pm Connacht take on Toulouse in what is one of the most anticipated Galway sporting encounters - rugby or otherwise - this year.

The Sportsground underwent a major expansion earlier this year, following the securing of Government funding of more than €420,000 by Fine Gael Galway West TD Brian Walsh.

“The result of the refurbishment and construction has been highly impressive and the Sportsground is now truly a stage worthy of hosting Heineken Cup rugby for the first time,” he said.

“There is palpable excitement at the prospect and I know that fans will be turning out in record numbers to support Connacht and create a fantastic atmosphere in what is now an excellent venue on Saturday.”

Dep Walsh held negotiations with Minister of State for Sport Michael Ring earlier this year to seek departmental funding to provide for the expansion and renovation of existing facilities at the Sportsground.

He announced that funding of €424,000 had successfully been sourced for the expansion of the stadium from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport last August, in addition to the €225,000 already provided by the IRFU.

The renovation works include the expansion of the Clan Terrace from 70 metres to almost 100 metres and the construction of an additional toilet block, bar and catering facilities behind the stand.

“I’m pleased to have been able to play my part in sourcing funding for this fantastic project,” said Dep Walsh. “I’m glad that Minister Ring demonstrated a great appreciation for the value of Connacht Rugby to the region and the many benefits that will accrue from this investment to the people of Galway.”

Gerry Kelly, CEO of Connacht Rugby, said: “I would like to pay huge thanks to Minister Ring and our local TD Brian Walsh for their enthusiasm and hard work in sourcing this funding.”
