JIMMY MONAGHAN, the highly talented Irish-American singer-songwriter, will be performing in the Acoustic Room, Áras na Mac Léinn, NUI Galway, today at 1pm.
Jimmy is one half of the Galway alternative/folk-rock duo Music For Dead Birds and he has released a new album under that moniker entitled The Pope’s Sister.
The album features 10 brief, but often arresting, songs which deal with the themes of various lives being influenced by the Roman Catholic Church.
The music is atmospheric alternative rock, played with a rawness that gives it a real edge, with the highlights being the guitar riff led tracks ‘The Candle Maker’s Sister’ and ‘Turn Yourself Inside Out’.
“The lyrical content is not a strong statement against the Catholic church,” says Jimmy, “more that it is a wry observation of the people involved with it and how it affects the personalities and relationships of families and friends.”
Support is from singer-songwriter Rory Bowens. The gig is part of NUIG’s Arts In Action programme. Admission is free and is open to the public as well as students.
