Greenfields easily accounted for Athlone in this one-sided fourth round Counnacht Senior League match played in Athlone on Sunday morning.

Athlone were straight out of the traps, launching the first attack of the game which ended in a narrow wide from Jennifer Hyde.

Greenfields, however, took control and were ahead after 10 minutes. When Sarah McDonnell took a reverse strike from the top of the circle, the ball went high and was palmed down by Athlone goalie Ciara Devaney. Forward Mary Healy was on hand to tap it in.

Greenfields went two up almost immediately after a series of textbook perfect passes. The move started with Alice Maher dispossessing Rita Barrett. A series of six passes ensued involving Maher, Alison Ryan, Neasa McGettigan, Mary Healy and Ciara Power, with Mary Healy finishing with a good shot to score her second.

Greenfields continued to control the game and were three up by the 25th minute. Neasa McGettigan passed from the right to midfielder Alison Ryan, who skipped past two defenders to score with a deft flick to the bottom left hand corner.

After the break Athlone went on the attack and forged two good saves from Sinead Collins. However Greenfields were next to score when Neasa McGettigan took possession from a long corner and played a one-two with Ciara Power before powering into the circle for the return pass and rounding goalkeeper Devaney to score.

The final goal came in the 51st minute when Alison Ryan, after taking a pass out of defence from Claire Watson, took a shot at goal from the top of the circle and Ciara Power was on hand to deflect it in, wrapping up a good day’s work for Greenfields.
