Conneely calls for removal of Occupy Galway protest

Fine Gael councillor Pádraig Conneely said the Continental Christmas Market, which returns to the city this month, “could be in doubt” if the Occupy Galway protesters remain in Eyre Square.

The Christmas Market will open in Eyre Square on Friday November 25, with work to set up the kiosks, cabins, and tents, beginning in the coming days.

Cllr Connelly claims the protesters have “no right to occupy public property”. He is calling for the “full rigours of the law” to be applied and for the Galway City Council to take “whatever action is required to ensure the Christmas marker operators have full access” to the square.

“The city needs business at this time and unsightly obstruction to public property should now be removed,” he said.

However the Occupy Galway protesters are on record as saying that they have no desire to obstruct or hinder the establishment and running of the Christmas Market, and that they will move to sections of the square not being used by the market in order to facilitate it.
