Mervue rewarded for improvement

Mervue United's vast improvement in 2011 was rewarded with a seventh placed finish in the League of Ireland First Division.

Alex Lee's goal four minutes from the end of Saturday's Fahy Field encounter with Finn Harps finished Mervue's season off on a positive note as Johnny Glynn's youngsters earned a fifth home win of the year. Glynn's diligent work ensures Mervue are now a respected team in this division and the continued development of Ger Hanley, Dave O'Brien, Martin Conneely, Etanda Nkololo, Jason Molloy, and Pat Hoban provides further encouragement.

Despite taking a two goal lead, Salthill Devon didn't have any joy at Ferrycarrig Park as Wexford Youths responded in style.

Wexford eventually emerged 5-2 victors after an absorbing clash as James Whelan's early brace was quickly cancelled out. That Wexford defeat meant that Salthill finished the campaign bottom of the standings with the only source of encouragement being the senior experience gained by Colm Horgan, Cian Fadden, Brian Gaffney, Timmy Molloy, and Whelan.
