Galway teenagers have claimed the honours and a new rescue boat at the finals of the ISA Yachtsman Euromarine Rib Challenge.
Fionn Delahunty (16 ), Ciaran Jordan (14 ) and Eamonn Murphy (12 ), representing Galway Sail Sports Club, fought off challenges from 14 sailing clubs to win a new powerboat valued at €12,500 for their club.
The competition, which is in its fourth year, is run by the Irish Sailing Association and was open to participants from the ages of 12 to 16. Each team began their training during the summer in preparation for the regional finals which took place in three locations around the country during September. The top 14 teams progressed to the grand final which took place on Saturday in the National Yacht Club in Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin.
Although the competition was nailbitingly close, with only two points separating the Galwegians, coached by Ciaran Oliver, from the runners-up from Foynes Yacht Club, the all-boys’ team demonstrated all the skills, knowledge and awareness needed to win.
