MARKETA IRGLOVA, who rose to prominence with her collaborations with Glen Hansard in The Swell Season and in the Oscar winning film Once, is coming to Galway.
Marketa will play a solo concert in St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church on Saturday November 5 at 8pm where she will perform songs from her debut solo album Anar.
The 23-year-old Czech native is a classically trained pianist and vocalist and her musical influences include Otis Redding, Nick Cave, and Jesus Christ Super Star. The 10-track Anar was written in New York and recorded in Chicago.
The album title comes from the Iranian word for pomegranate and was inspired by a painting entitled The Last Fall by Iranian artist Nahid Hagigat, which featured a crimson pomegranate placed on a shining golden background.
Irglova purchased the painting and for her, the pomegranate, a fruit often used to symbolise fertility and abundance, stood as an emblem for the “fertile land of creativity” she began to explore after moving to New York.
Tickets are €18/15 and are on-sale from Ticketmaster and www.roisindubh.net
