Michael Breathnach handballer Ciana Ni Churraoin capped a fantastic year when she secured the All-Ireland girls’ junior singles title at the finals in Kells recently.
The talented teenager beat her main rival Maeve McElduff from the Loretto Convent in Omagh in the semi-final and accounted for Katie Flemming from Cork’s Boherbue CS in a one-sided final.
Ni Churraoin can now add the college’s title to u-16 singles titles in both 40x20 and 60x30 as well as the One-Wall Nationals title last July.
The Coláiste na Coribe transition year student was Connacht’s only winner at the weekend, but there were some encouraging performances. Glenamaddy Community School students reached three finals with Cathal Connelly losing out in the intermediate singles final to the impressive Paudi Quish from Limerick by15-5 15-11, while Enda Connelly and Jason Ryan lost out to Colin Corbett and Niall Bolton from St Joseph’s Tulla. St Mary’s student Darragh Mulkerrins suffered a similar fate as he reached the junior singles decider where he faced Evan Sheridan from Kells. Sheridan took the opening game comfortably but Mulkerrins made a real fight of it in the second, only to lose out 15 aces to 13. Roisin Ni Chonghaile also of Coláiste na Coiribe lost out in the senior singles final to Ciara Mahon from Kilkenny, while Glenamaddy’s Mary Fahy and Elaine Mitchell were beaten in the junior doubles semi-final.
The 60x30 juvenile season concludes over the next two weekends with the provincial B semi-finals and finals on Saturday and the fourth annual John Gaffney Memorial Tournament in Ballaghaderreen a week later.
