Lackagh finally recieved confirmation of its new community playground when grant approval to the tune of €104,000 was announced this week. The money has been received from Galway Rural Development (GRD ) and work is due to begin within the next two weeks.
The tender contract has been awarded to GoPlay Ltd from Corofin and, weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by Christmas. Planning permission has already been granted by the Galway County Council for the 940 square metre amentity. Such community projects can take over two years but the provision by Turloughmore Hurling Club of a suitable site at Knockdoemore and timely GRD approval means that initial work on the playground can soon begin.
Father Desmond Walsh, who was instrumental in launching the campaign said: “This major drive within the community has brought the project alive. We would like to thank everyone from the Claregalway, Turloughmore, Lackagh, and Cregmore catchment areas as well as businesses who have contributed to this success.” A sponsorship board will be placed in the playground to thank all major sponsors.
The grant covers 75 per cent of the total cost with the remiander being accumulated through fundraising. A concerted fundraising effort has been under way over the past few months and the committee have been delighted with the results, although the final figure has not yet been reached. Committee member Samantha Frawley says: “We are still falling short of the overall project cost by €20,000 and would like to give one last opportunity to the public to contribute to this worthy project.
