An art auction, featuring works by many leading local and national artists, takes place in The Rowing Club, Woodquay, tomorrow at 8.30pm, to raise funds for The Galway University Hospitals Arts Trust,
Art lovers will have an opportunity to bid for works by Siobhán Piercy, Mary Horan, Annie West, Elaine Byrne, Aideen Barry, Kieran Tobin, Eithna Joyce, Cliona Fox, Tony Gunning, Emmet Kierans, Charlotte Kelly, Ceara Conway, Paul Maye, Diane McCabe, Leah Beggs, Kamil Krawczak, and Pam O’Connell.
A unique John Behan sculpture, The Dublin Viking Boat, will also be auctioned on the night and is already generating a huge amount of interest.
The auction will be hosted by actor Rod Goodall, best known for his work with Footsbarn Theatre, Macnas, and Blue Teapot Theatre. He was also in the recent production of Faith Healer in the Town Hall. Live music on the night will be provided by the Molly Hicks and Totem Roll.
All proceeds will go towards the running costs of the Galway University Hospitals Arts Trust. Based in Galway University Hospitals, the charity brings live art experiences to patients, visitors, and staff as a means of improving the hospital experience for all.
Programme highlights include regular music events at ward level; clown doctors in the children’s ward; Troubadours for Health by The Gombeens for older patients; memoir writing for long stay patients; as well as an extensive programme of classes, exhibitions, poetry, music and theatre events.
In 2010 artist Lidia de Lang was commissioned by the trust to create artwork for the recently refurbished paediatric department. The children’s ward and outpatient area now has a colourful and delightful array of animals on the walls.
“This is the first art auction of its kind that we have organised and already it is generating considerable interest,” said Margaret Flannery, arts officer of the GUHAT. “It promises to be an exciting and fun-filled event that will raise much-needed funds to support the ongoing good work of the trust.”
