A NIGHT of passion is to be unleashed in Leisureland on Tuesday at 8pm with a concert from the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, conductor Vladimir Altschuler, and violinist Elizabeth Cooney.
The programme will feature Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No 6. “I love it as I have never loved any one of my musical offspring before,” said Tchaikovsky of this work; The Moldau by Czech composer Smetana, which attempts to depict the River Vltava tumbling through the Bohemian countryside of his homeland; and Dvorák’s spontaneous and lyrical Violin Concerto in A minor which ends with a virtuosic and exhilarating conclusion.
Elizabeth Cooney is regarded as one of the most exciting and dynamic young artists of her generation. In 2002 Elizabeth won second prize, the audience prize, and the award for best interpretation of the compulsory piece at the Sion-Valais International Competition for Violin in Switzerland.
Vladimir Altschuler made his first appearance as guest conductor of the RTÉ NSO in 1994. Born in Leningrad in 1946, Vladimir Altschuler graduated from the Leningrad State Conservatory both in conducting and as violist. He joined the Leningrad Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra in 1969 and in 1982 became that orchestra’s principal violist.
Tickets are €22/18/10 and are available at 091 -705962 or from Opus II, St Augustine Street. The Next concert is Birdsong Becomes Music on Wednesday December 3 in the Aula Maxima, NUI Galway.
