Atkins Ireland, one of the world's leading providers of professional consulting and construction support services, is working with Galway County Council to procure contracts to design and construct two new wastewater treatment plants in Galway. Construction on the plants in Letterfrack and Clonbur has just started and they are expected to be completed by May 2009.

Atkins’ office in Galway is located in the Parkmore Technology Park, Galway city.
Both of the old treatment works, which have become outdated and undersized, are being demolished and two completely new treatment plants are being built.
In Letterfrack, the new waste water treatment works will be located adjacent to Letterfrack furniture college. The plant is designed to serve a population equivalent (p.e. ) of 800, but can accommodate future expansion if required. In Clonbur the capacity of the existing waste water treatment works has been exceeded and the new plant is designed to serve a population equivalent of 710. This plant can also be expanded at a later date if required.
Both plants are being advanced through a design-build process, where Atkins prepared a performance specification for the tender documents and Glan Agua were appointed subsequently to design and build, commission, and hando ver the new plants to Galway County Council. In addition to the construction of new treatment plants, Glan Agua will also complete the upgrading and expansion of the sewerage and mains water networks in the areas, to Atkins’ designs.
Commenting on the contract, Rónan Daly, senior engineer with Atkins Ireland said the company is delighted to be working with Galway County Council on this project.
“These schemes will provide the villages of Clonbur and Letterfrack with modern and efficient wastewater treatment systems which will provide for the current population and will also provide for future growth.
“In addition, there will be a significant improvement to the quality of treated wastewater being discharged currently from the existing plants”.
