GAAW organises Peace Convoy for Shannon protests

The Galway Alliance Against War will mark the 10th anniversary of its foundation this Sunday with a peace convoy from Galway to Shannon Airport.

“Ten years ago this month the USA invaded Afghanistan and overnight Shannon became a hub for Washington’s military machine,” said Niall Farrell, the peace group’s PRO. “Over two million US soldiers, and millions of tons of military hardware have travelled through the airport en route to Afghanistan and Iraq.”

To mark what the GAAW calls “this bloody anniversary” the group is joining with peace activists from across the country in a peaceful protest from 2pm to 3pm, at Shannon airport on Sunday.

“Shannon has been directly linked to former US president Bush’s policy of ‘extraordinary rendition’ - the kidnapping, torturing, and incarceration of ‘suspects’,” said Mr Farrell. “According to Shannonwatch, which monitors flights through the airport, the CIA jets previously involved in ‘extraordinary rendition’ still pass through Shannon, which would suggest Ireland is an accessory to this human rights’ abuse.”

Those wishing to participate should assemble at 11.30am at the car park opposite Island House/Galway Cathedral or contact the GAAW at 087 - 9159787 or [email protected]
