Galway to host barbershop singers convention this weekend

Leading Irish and European Barbershop singers are coming to Galway this weekend to entertain the public and take part in the 23rd National Convention of Barbershop Singers.

The convention takes place in NUI Galway’s Bailey Allen Hall tomorrow, Saturday, and Sunday, and will feature more than 400 barbershop singers taking part in international chorus and quartet competitions.

Barbershop groups taking part in the event include Class Ring from the USA, England’s The Cambridge Chord Company, Holland’s 4 Again and Keychord, and Sweden’s aBsolut. Quartets from Sligo, Wicklow, Westmeath, Dublin, and Cork will also take part.

Highlights of the weekend include the Entertainment Competitions on Friday night and the Gala Prize Winners concert on Saturday night. Both events are open to the public for a nominal entry charge of €10 payable on the door.

RTE journalist Seán O’Rourke and Mayor of Galway Hildegarde Naughton will be the guest judges for Friday night’s Entertainment Competition, alongside RTÉ broadcaster Caroline Murphy and internationally renowned Swedish quartet aBsolut.

Saturday night’s concert features aBsolut and the winners of the Gold and Silver competitions held during the weekend. Tickets for Friday and Saturday nights’ concerts are available on the door, concerts begin at 8pm.
