Debate on transgender issues tonight

NUI, Galway’s Literary and Debating Society will present a Transgender Panel Discussion in the Kirwan Theatre, main concourse, this evening at 7pm.

Topics for discussion on the night will include outlining what transgenderism is; how it affects people; the different attitudes people have towards it; the status of transgender people in Ireland; the legal issues surrounding it; and Minister Joan Burton’s proposed Gender Recognition legislation.

The speakers will be Louise Hannon, who won a transgender discrimination High Court case; Michael Farrell, solicitor who represented Lydia Foy in her successful case against the State; Bernie Fitzgerald, gender therapist for Rainbow Support Services, Limerick; Dr Don Horrocks, Evangelical Alliance UK; and Keith Tiller, a former transgender person who now runs a ministry that mentors transgender people on the Biblical response to transgenderism.

There will be an opportunity to ask questions to the panel or make individual speeches on the topic. The event is open to the public as well as students.
