Oyster Opening Championship attracts entries from sixteen countries

The Bollinger World Oyster Opening Championship, a highlight of the 57th Galway International Oyster and Seafood Festival, takes place on Saturday from 12pm in the festival marquee on Dock Road.

Contestants from 16 countries featuring nearly every continent of the world will compete for the coveted title, currently held by 2010 winner Johan Malm of Sweden.

Billed by many as the main attraction of the Oyster Festival, there will be oyster tasting, a best dressed lady event with prizes in excess of €1,000, and a packed line-up of live music with the Portherhouse Band, the Long John Jump Band, The Bentley Boys, and the Sean de Burca Band.

Throughout the day, guests are also invited to enjoy a seafood medley followed by a choice of fresh Galway oysters or a locally smoked salmon platter whilst sipping on a complimentary beverage of choice (vegetarian and non-seafood/meat platters can be arranged with advance notice ).
