Excitement is building for this year’s Culture Night, when artists from Galway and beyond get to showcase just why the city is at the forefront of the arts.
Galway Culture Night, taking place next week, Friday September 23, showcases everything that is great about being immersed in the arts, working in the arts, and going along to enjoy it.
The initiative was pioneered by a Galway man, the late Seamus Brennan TD, who believed that the arts are a vital component for any city to thrive. And thrive it has, with more events taking place this year for Culture Night than any other year.
Run by Temple Bar Cultural Trust and supported by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Culture Night offers the opportunity to throw out the red carpet to visitors and invite them in to experience for themselves a cultural phenomenon.
This year for the first time, Culture Night has joined forces with Sea2Sky in Salthill, a great event, celebrating European Researchers Day. Organisers have also joined up with the fashion school at Galway Technical Institute to bring a flavour of the creations designed by up and coming designers. From 6pm to 8pm, why not see what Galway Community Circus have in store when they bring their acrobatic skills to Culture Night in the Middle Pier at the Docks. Or sample the street entertainment outside the Collegiate Church of St Nicholas before you head inside and sample some music.
A host of exhibitions and demonstrations are taking place throughout the evening with many venues opening late to offer you the chance to sample as much as you can.
If you fancy taking it easy and enjoying some film, Town Hall Theatre is showing a documentary by Eamonn Little while Galway Film Centre is showcasing a film on Bernadette Devlin by Lelia Doolan.
If you are in the mood to sample the outdoors, Ballinfoyle Community Garden will host music and food in its beautiful surroundings. For those of you who want to look longingly out onto Galway Bay, then a visit to Mutton Island Lighthouse is a must on the night. Increase your knowledge of Galway’s heritage by popping along to Red Earl’s Hall, a magnificent medieval fortress. Street entertainment will catch your eye outside the Collegiate Church of St Nicholas.
And if you want to take in as much as you can, avail of the Culture Bus, courtesy of Bus Éireann. This will bring you around the city for free so you can capture your very own Culture Night experience.
