Galway remains expensive

Despite a drop of three per cent in the first six months of this year, Galway is still one of the most expensive destinations for hotels in Ireland.

According to the Hotel Price Index figures released by Hotels.com website the average price for a room per night fell by three per cent in the first six months of 2011, bringing it to €96, this compares to €99 in the same period in 2010.

For many years Galway was the most expensive destination in Ireland for hotel rooms, however there has been a gradual drop in prices in recent times. Following this latest drop in price, Galway is now the fourth most expensive destination for hotels in Ireland after Kilkenny (€104 ), Wexford (€104 ), and Athlone (€97 ).

On a national level, hotel room prices actually rose by two per cent in the first six months of this year, the first time hotel rooms have risen in three years, indicating signs of recovery in the market, with the average hotel rate in Ireland now at €81 per night. Hotels.com say that prior to this hotel rates had fallen some 35 per cent in the past three years.

The Hotels.com Hotel Price Index is a survey of hotel prices in major city destinations across the world and is based on bookings made on Hotels.com across 125,000 hotels in 19,000 destinations.
