Man charged with gang drug dealing sent for trial

A man arrested as part of ‘Operation Foolscap’ and charged with dealing drugs with the intention of enhancing the ability of a criminal organisation has been sent forward for trial at the Galway Circuit Criminal Court sittings commencing next month.

Mark Dowling (22 ) with an address at 58 Castlepark, Ballybane, is charged with committing a serious offence, namely the possession of cannabis with intent to supply while knowing that a criminal organisation existed and with the purpose of enhancing the ability of that organisation in the district of Galway between July 22, 2009, and June 1, 2010, contrary to Section 72 of the Criminal Justice Act 2006.

Dowling was one of a number of men arrested in connection with ‘Operation Foolscap’, a major crackdown on organised crime in the west.

At Galway District Court on Monday Garda Barry Walshe gave evidence of serving the book of evidence on the accused.

Inspector Mick Coppinger then informed the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions has consented to Dowling being sent forward for trial at the next sitting of Galway Circuit Court commencing October 6.

After giving what is known as an alibi warning, Judge Fahy ordered Dowling to be returned for trial on bail as set by the High Court and granted legal aid plus one junior counsel.
