Three hundred queue for allotments in Shantalla

A plot of land at the rear of the Shantalla Community Centre is to become a community allotment site for gardening and vegetable growing enthusiasts.

A proposal for an allotment was made at the June meeting of the Galway City Council’s Recreation, Amenity and Culture Strategic Policy Committee by Labour councillor Billy Cameron.

His proposal, seconded by Cllr Catherine Connolly, called on City Hall to examine a piece of land for allotments at Shantalla Community Centre. The proposal has now become a reality as space to the rear of the centre has been designated for the allotment and funding of €50,000 has been provided.

“I am looking forward to seeing the first allotment site for Galway rolled out on a sound footing,” said Cllr Cameron. “I believe it was important to establish an allotment based on best practice and to invest the €50,000 on one site rather than spread minimum resources over a number of sites throughout the city.”

The site is less than one acre and has not been used for any purpose but has lain idle for years. According to Cllr Cameron there is a waiting list of some 300 people who are keen for a space at any allotments which are set up.

“The Shantalla allotment will at least provide a start on a new venture for a number of ‘green fingered’ local people,” said Cllr Cameron.
