Michael Clarkson and Kate Hennessy, the two most promising juniors Connacht has produced in recent years, claimed the crowns as new king and queen of of the courts in Galway.
The youngest pair of club champions in the history of Galway Lawn Tennis Club - at 15 and 14 respectively - defeated former champions and bookies’ favourites Mark Smyth (7-6 6-4 ) and Jenny Burrows (6-2 6-3 ) to win this year’s titles.
Another promising junior, Joshua Marvesley, was narrowly defeated by Jaroslav Jukubowicz (6-1 6-7 7-5 ) in the men’s B final.
Hennessy also partnered Aoife Doyle to victory over top seeds Ber Keane and Claire Kenny (7-5 6-1 ) in the ladies’ doubles, while Clarkson combined with last year’s club champion Patrick Harris to reach the final of the men’s doubles but they were thwarted by Jonathan Klampe and another of the province’s top juniors Sean Lang (6-4 6-2 ).
Klampe also grabbed a second title when teaming up with Jenny Burrows to deny Claire Kenny and Cormac O’Connor (6-2 6-1 ) in the final of the mixed doubles. Herve Boinnard and Jerome Sainz won the men’s B doubles and completing the proceedings Dermot Flatley and Stephanie Sage were victorious in the mixed plate event.
