Mervue continue to top table

Athenry lost their Western Hygiene Supplies premier league fixture to leaders Mervue by 3 - 1 on Sunday.

Athenry conceded early and went further behind to a great Cunningham strike before Benny Lawless pulled one back just before the break with a dipping drive from about 20 yards.

Playing with the elements in the second half, Athenry dominated possession, but could not equalise against a resilient and skillful Mervue outfit. Mervue sealed the win with a converted penalty eight minutes from time.

Athenry are now in a mid-table position with six games played, while Mervue are four points off closest rivals St Bernard’s at the top of the table.

The club hosts a car boot sale on Sunday from 9am to 1pm at the clubhouse. Cars €10, vans €20. We hope to make this a regular event.
