Galwegians came out on top by 15 - 8 in the Connacht Senior League fixture against Corinthians at Glenina on Saturday,
The blustery conditions aided the visitors in the first half, and Corinthians got on the score after five minutes when centre Wayne Williams nailed a penalty after Galwegians were penalised for infringing.
However the home side posted the next two scores. The first came after 15 minutes when second row Liam Scahill picked up a loose ball as Corinthians struggled to make headway in their own 22, and prop Jamie Stephens finished off out wide.
Galwegians then added to their score with a second try - this time a fine individual effort by centre Owen McKean caught the defence napping, and when John Cleary added the extras, Galwegians led by 12 - 3 at the break.
Galwegians, with the wind behind them in the second half, looked as if they would pull away and win easily especially with Clarke slotting a penalty early in the half. But credit to Corinthians who kept slogging away. They were rewarded with a fine try by captain Fionn Gormley which was unconverted, but it was not enough to topple their division one opponents.
Corinthians’ next outing in the league is at home to Connemara tomorrow at 7.30pm.
