Mervue hope to test league leaders

Encouraged by a decent season, Mervue United will hope to test the resolve of runaway first division leaders Shelbourne at Fahy’s Field tomorrow night.

Last Saturday Mervue made a gutsy comeback against an Austin Skelly inspired Longford Town at Flancare Park. Skelly scored twice for the midlanders, but Mervue summoned responses both sides of the interval from Pat Hoban and Damien O’Rourke to rescue a point.

Mervue are in seventh place, but the competitor within Johnny Glynn will know that Athlone Town are gaining rapidly behind them so the Galway team will be eager to take something from the Shelbourne encounter.

Ger Hanley, David O’Brien, Kenny Farrell, Martin Conneely, John Moutney, and Etanda Nkololo all made positive contributions for Mervue and they will need to be similarly effective when Shelbourne hit the west.

Salthill Devon, who face a difficult assignment away to Monaghan United at Gortakeegan tomorrow, need to improve following another home defeat to Athlone Town at Drom.

Though Ronan Conlon bagged an equaliser in the second half for Salthill, Athlone hit back with two goals to claim all the spoils. Salthill examined Monaghan earlier in the campaign so Brian Geraghty, Conlon, Timmy Molloy, and Charlie Burke will be spearheading the Devon challenge in the border town.
