Galway ladies suffer late loss

The Galway Ladies Senior B lost the Aisling McGing semi-final to Dublin by 4-04 - 1-12, thus completing the whitewash of all Galway Ladies teams by Dublin at the semi-final stage.

In a cracking game of football, Dublin were first off the mark with a point from Hannah Tyrell, but Eilis Gannon replied for Galway with a free. Deirdre Brennan, Shelly Burke, and Gannon added to the tally, but the killer blow came as Dublin ran in two goals, one from a penalty. However Galway’s Burke and Gannon scored one each from play and one each from frees to bring Galway into the break with a one-point lead.

Dublin levelled with a Tyrrell point and it remained neck and neck until Dublin were awarded a second penalty which Shona Barrett converted. Denise McKenna added another point before Galway took over. The next 10 minutes was all Galway, Charlotte Cooney pointed followed by a goal from Ann Marie Flanagan and a point from Eilis Gannon.

The game was in injury time when disaster struck. Amy Rohan and Tara Hession both went down injured, and when Deirdre Brennan was taken down, the referee blew for what everybody thought was a free for Galway. Instead the free was given to Dublin and they scored a goal, ending Galway hopes of getting to the final.
