Retirement home of the late Dr Noel Browne on the market

Former minister Dr Noel Browne and his wife Phyllis lived in the peace and tranquillity of this beautiful home in Cloughmore South, Ballinahown, from around 1973. The happiest years of their lives were spent here. It was where they always wanted to be surrounded by the wonders of Connemara, nature and also with kind neighbours who always kept a caring eye on them.

The views of the bay from the cottage are uninterrupted and breathtaking. The Browne family holidayed in Connemara for many years before they bought Cloughmore. They originally purchased a ruin and re-roofed and converted it into a lovely holiday home overlooking the lake at Cloughmore. This house was then sold, but after a couple of years they acquired the cottage at Cloughmore. It had no electricity or running water. Slowly it began to take shape, they fitted gas lights and then running water. The Brownes made it their family home about 38 years ago. The cró was used by the family for summer holidays. The family remember having picnics on the shore, lighting a turf fire and cooking bacon and eggs for the little ones who were patiently taught to swim by their grandfather. Dr Browne had a small sailing boat which the children also learned to master.

In the evenings Dr Browne would walk all the way around the shoreline, lying on rocks to watch the cormorants dry their wings or listen to the larks singing. Mrs Phyllis Browne would often collect him and they would return to the cottage to eat homemade blackberry tart and scones which you could smell as you walked in the door. Dr Browne passed away in 1997 and about 10 years later his beloved wife Phyllis died. They are both buried by the sea at Cloughmore.

The property comprises two units; the main cottage and the Little Cró.
