Shantalla man to walk five hundred miles in a month

A Shantalla man will undertake a 500 mile solo trek in Spain next month to raise funds for the local heart and stroke charity Croi.

Volunteer Peter Nelson, who for the past eight years has been taking part in challenges in aid of Croi, the West of Ireland Cardiac Foundation, will walk along the Camino Way in September. He will complete the challenge in four weeks, walking more than 17 miles a day.

He has previously taken part in two South Africa treks, a Snow Trek and numerous full and half marathons. Mr Nelson has completed 22 full marathons in the last eight years. Through fundraising for these events he has raised a tremendous amount of money for the charity.

Neil Johnson, the chief executive of Croi, says it is indebted to him for his long term support and commitment.

“Heart disease and stroke accounts for almost 50 per cent of all deaths and are a major cause of disability and distress for individuals and their families as well as being a huge burden on our healthcare system. Croi, the West of Ireland Cardiac Foundation, saves lives by impacting at virtually every level of cardiac care prevention, treatment and rehabilitation.

“In September Peter is undertaking his biggest achallenge yet in aid of Croi. He will be trekking the 500 mile long Way of St James, which is part of the Camino Way, an ancient pilgrim path in the North of Spain. He will be trekking the 500 mile route in four weeks walking distances of over 17 miles every day!”

Mr Nelson views the challenge as not just a test of his physical and mental capabilities but also an opportunity to raise money for a worthy local cause. He is covering the cost of the trip himself so all the money raised will go directly to help the fight against heart disease and stroke in the west of Ireland.

By sponsoring more than €20 to his challenge you will be entered into a draw with a prize of a €150 voucher for a restaurant of your choice.
