Loughrea to get €150,000 jobs initiative boost

Galway East senator Lorraine Higgins has welcomed the announcement this week that Loughrea is to get a €150,000 boost under the Jobs Initiative.

"I would like to commend the Minister of State, Alan Kelly, on this announcement. The investment announced for Loughrea is badly needed and the community will benefit greatly from this injection of funding. It will not only improve the quality of life for residents but it will also create employment in the community.

“Under the scheme a series of traffic and pedestrian control measures will be introduced around the schools including junction improvements, vertical deflection ramps and signalised pedestrian crossings. It will create about 250 person days of employment between now and the end of the year.

“This is part of the funding under the Jobs Initiative, by which €15 million was specifically ring fenced for sustainable travel projects. Smarter Travel projects are designed to encourage and facilitate a modal switch towards more sustainable transport methods such as pedestrianisation and cycling.”

Senator Higgins concluded: “Galway County Council will be benefitting from the re-location of funds from projects that cannot be completed in Dublin and I am delighted to see the monies put to good use in County Galway”.
