The GSPCA is warning pet owners to keep a close eye on their animals following the discovery of a dead cat in Wellpark this week. The animal, which was found in a garden on Sunday morning, had been decapitated.
It is understood the resident who found the animal discovered another dead cat in his garden the previous week. The animal was found on Sunday and he left the carcase in situ until GSPCA officials returned to duty on Monday morning, only to find it had been moved across the garden during the night.
“It is unlikely that it was moved by an animal of any kind as there are no signs of any other damage to the body,” a spokesperson for the GSPCA said. “This man also found dead cat in his garden last week, he suspects that it was poisoned.”
A veterinary examination of the second cat found that the head had been removed with a sharp blade. The animal’s head has not been found.
“We are extremely worried about this incident and I think this is at least the third we have had for the eastern part of Galway city,” the GSPCA spokesperson added. “The person who did this is a psychopath and is a very dangerous person. It has been proven with mass killers in America that they started out abusing animals and then went on to children and adults.”
The charity has advised pet owners in Wellpark, Renmore, Ballyloughane, Ballybane, Mervue, and the Tuam road to be vigilant. Anyone with information is asked to contact the GSPCA on (091 ) 563161 from 10am to 5.20pm, or email [email protected]
Galway Gardaí are also investigating the incident and anyone with information is asked to contact Galway Garda Station at (091 ) 538000.
