As part of the renowned Tuam Arts Festival, the town’s St Mary’s Cathedral will play host to a concert entitled ‘Some Enchanted Evening’ on Saturday August 19. Starting at 8pm, the performance will comprise opera arias, French songs, and a compilation of songs from movies and musicals. ‘Some Enchanted Evening’ will host an array of talented performers at the pinnacle of their art, including a native of the town as the star tenor.
Eoin Hynes is a past pupil of the Mercy and St Patrick’s primary schools and St Jarlath’s College, and made his television debut singing on Gay Byrne’s final Late Late Toy Show in 1998. With a degree in music from NUI Maynooth and a Masters in music performance from DIT, Hynes is a highly qualified, experienced, and accomplished performer and has starred in many acclaimed operas from school renditions of Les Miserables and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, to college productions of Mozart’s Die Zauberflote to Oratorio and St John’s Passion in the National Concert Hall. He is currently a young associate artist with Opera Theatre Company.
Hynes will be joined on stage by Dublin baritone David Scott and accompanist Richard McGrath. Scott is a student at the DIT Conservatory of Music and was awarded this year’s Messiah Cup for Oratorio. He has performed in a variety of roles in musicals and operas as diverse as Oklahoma, the Gondoliers, The Sound Of Music and La Traviata.
McGrath holds an honours degree in music and French and a Masters in performance and musicology from NUI Maynooth. He is currently studying piano accompaniment at the revered Guildhall School of Music and Dance in London, where he won the first pianist’s prize at their song competition last year. He has also participated in masterclasses with artists of the calibre of Roger Vignoles, Wolfgang Holzmair and Julius Drake.
‘Some Enchanted Evening’ certainly has all the hallmarks of an evening not to be missed. Tickets are priced at €15, or €12 with a concession, and are available at Quinn’s shop on 093-26060
