THE GREAT American country and folk singer-songwriter Gillian Welch recently released her new album The Harrow & The Harvest.
The album, recorded with Welch’s longtime musical partner David Rawlings in Tennessee, has been hailed by The Decemberists’ Colin Meloy as introducing to music “a new Southern sound” while Uncut has already proclaimed it a “timeless country classic”.
Welch has rarely put a foot wrong since delivering her stunning debut Revival in 1996 which set the template for her sparse, compelling, sound which traverses country, folk, bluegrass, and Christian music.
Since then she has become a hugely influential and respected musician and songwriter, with her songs recorded by such country titans as Emmylou Harris and Willie Nelson.
Welch’s influence has also impacted on many Galway folk musicians and on Wednesday at 8.30pm they will gather in Kelly’s, Bridge Street, to perform songs by Gillian Welch at the Look At Miss Ohio concert.
Performing songs by Gillian Welch, from across her career, on the night will be singer-songwriter Noelie McDonnell duetting with Pauline Scanlon, the Dingle singer whose voice, The Irish Times said was “a superb mix of china cup fragility and steely resilience”. Singer-songwriter Christof van der Ven will duetting with Galway folk/Americana singer Noriana Kennedy.
Also performing on the night will be Gráda’s Nicola Joyce, who was described by The Wall Street Journal as “a magnificent vocalist who sings with sheer beauty and poignancy”; and Waterboys’ double bass player Trevor Hutchinson, New Zealand guitarist Gerry Paul, and fiddler Sean Regan.
Admission is €10. For more information e-mail [email protected]
