The Galway City Fairtrade Committee will carry out a survey over the coming weeks to assess people’s knowledge of fair trade and examine whether attitudes to fair trade have changed since the last survey, which took place five years ago.
The committee will also host an information table in Shop Street next Friday and Saturday, August 19 and 20, providing information on the benefits of fair trade and available products.
Street surveys began this week and will take place in the city today (Thursday ), Saturday, Tuesday August 16, Friday August 19, and Saturday August 20.
Galway has been a Fair Trade city since 2005. The Galway City Fairtrade Committee, set up as part of the initiative, organises promotional events throughout the year.
Fair Trade works on the premise that farmers with smallholder farms and workers on plantations are guaranteed better working conditions. In order to get the Fair Trade mark certain conditions must be met, where fair trade pays growers a fixed prices regardless of the world price of the product and also guarantees health and safety standards.
