SPAIN’S RICH culture, diverse history, and extraordinary range of native music - a fusion of European, Islamic, Jewish, and Gypsy styles - has never failed to seduce and inspire.
Some of the great works by Spanish composers will be performed in St Mary’s Cathedral Tuam on Tuesday at 8pm in a concert entitled Sketches of Spain.
On the night, soprano Sylvia O’Brien and pianist Maria McGarry will perform Manuel de Falla’s ‘Siete Canciones Populares Espanolas’ and El Amor Brujo; Enrique Granados’ Los Requiebros’, ‘Quejas o la Maja y el ruiseñor’, ‘El Amor y la Muerte’; and a series of works by Fernando J Obradors. There will also be a performance of Brazilian composer Hector Villa Lobos’ ‘Bachianas Brasileiras No 5’.
Mayo’s Maria McGarry is a graduate of the US Juilliard School’s prestigious Artist Diploma in Performance programme, while her recitals at London’s Wigmore Hall and the National Concert Hall in Dublin have received much acclaim.
Sylvia O’Brien is a regular guest with RTÉ’s NSO and Concert Orchestra and has performed with the St Cecilia Orchestra, the Irish Chamber Orchestra, the German NDR, and the Dutch Magogo Chamber Orchestra.
