Labana to bring the Latin rock and r’n’b to Galway

AN ORGY of Latin rock, jazz, hip-hop and funk is on the menu when Labana, led by Cuban guitarist and composer, Dany Martinez, hit the stage of The Black Box next week.

Labana have pioneered this contemporary Latin mix of rock, r’n’b, and hip hop, which reflects the influences of Santana and Herbie Hancock.

Born in Havana in 1972, Dany studied classical music for four years in the Manuel Saumell Conservatory before branching out to play blues and rock.

At 19, while still a student, he debuted as a guitarist at the Jazz Plaza Festival in Havana. Graduating shortly afterwards as guitarist, arranger, composer, and ensemble conductor, he played with Cuarto Espacio and Afrocuba and guested with the Buena Vista Social Club. In 2000 he founded Labana and has been leading the group since.

Labana play The Black Box on Friday August 12 at 9pm followed by a Salsa disco with DJ Matt. Tickets are available from the Town Hall on 091 - 569777 and www.tht.ie
