Galwegians on Jobseeker’s Benefit who are keen to upskill and retrain should apply for the Government’s new JobBridge scheme and avail of the 70 vacant internships in Galway.
This is the view of Labour Galway West TD Derek Nolan, who said that nationally just 23 internships have been set up through the €20 million national internship initiative, even though there are some 70 vacant places in Galway alone.
“This scheme offers jobseekers the opportunity to gain the necessary skills and experience to enter or return to the jobs market,” said Dep Nolan. “In a difficult job market this initiative provides people with a chance to upskill and I would urge people to apply immediately to become involved.”
According to Dep Nolan, many of the training opportunities advertised for Galway offer a “quality training experience” in science, marketing, business administration, and engineering.
“This scheme will build the confidence of people who have been left unemployed, and greatly enhance their career prospects,” he said. “Many interns will prove their value to participating organisations, hopefully being offered employment at the end of their internships.”
A total of 5,000 places are available on the scheme, which is open to individuals who have been unemployed for more than three months. Participating interns will receive an allowance of €50 per week, in addition to their social welfare entitlement, over the course of their six to nine month internship.
