Plans for Christmas market go on public display tomorrow

The proposal for the 2011 Christmas Continental Market go on public display from tomorrow until September 16, after which there will be a two week period for submissions to be made.

The Mayor of Galway Councillor Hildegarde Naughton is calling on the public to view the plans and make submissions.

“The Christmas Continental Market is a great opportunity to promote Galway city on a national and international level,” she said. “Like any new project it is important to learn from last year’s Christmas market and constantly strive to improve it.”

Mayor Naughton said the market will give “an estimated boost of €10 million into the local economy” and that the new operator, Maria Moynihan Lee and VSC Events Ltd, has “considerable experience in organising and promoting events such as the Volvo Ocean Race, the Galway Powerboat Festival, and the Cork Clipper Festival”.

Mayor Naughton said that as the city has just held the Galway Film Fleadh, the Galway Arts Festival, and The Galway Races, and the Iron Man Race, the Oyster Festival, and Connacht Rugby’s Heineken Cup matches are due in the autumn, it is “important for the promotion of the city to keep the momentum going”.

“It is important to have events like this taking place on a year round basis,” she said, “and the Christmas Continental Market will play an important part in promoting the city as an all year round destination.”
