Notes for the season

Fragrance news

When choosing a new scent remember that you can only smell up to three scents at a time. Brown Thomas experts say it is advisable to wait 30 seconds for the alcohol to evaporate, then you will be able to find out what the top notes of the perfume are.

Top notes are highly volatile, evaporate quickly, and do not last very long. It is the base notes that have a profound influence on the fragrance, and they are longer lasting, usually coming out 20 minutes after applying. They also suggest re-applying your perfume every four hours, I do it practically every chance I get. I still remember being asked to leave the classroom at 13 by Sr Laurence in Seamount to wash off the copious amounts of migraine-inducing Jean Nate that I had liberally doused myself in before class during my first year of secondary school, and all the sympathetic glances from the other girls. The injustice! Readers will be relieved to know my taste in perfume has improved since then, and my scents no longer come in bright yellow plastic bottles. Below are some of our favourite new perfumes, now available in Brown Thomas.

Chanel No 19 Poudre: Like the original, in No 19 Poudre crisp green notes contrast with powdery iris in a bold olfactory marriage. It is a modern, light, somehow younger, version of the original. It is just so gorgeous and clean smelling. On the Chanel counter now, come in and try it.

Elie Saab: The creator of this fragrance enlisted the help of French perfumer Francis Kurkdjian, who has previously worked on iconic scents by designers such as Jean Paul Gaultier. This perfume is woody and features notes of fruity aromas such as orange blossom, jasmine, and rose honey.

Oh Lola by Marc Jacobs: This is a new twist on the original Lola fragrance launched in 2009; it has been described as lively, playful, and cheerful. Dakota Fanning is the face of the campaign, and oddly it does always seem to work out that if you identify at all with the personality of the person fronting these campaigns, whether for skincare or fragrance, it will tend to work perfectly for you.

Take your time when choosing a new scent, at Brown Thomas we would recommend you come in, try on, then walk around in it for a few hours and see if it suits you. Most girls have a day scent and a night scent, and some even change with the seasons. Remember, the way you smell is one of the single most individual and memorable things about you.
