New Irish record for Galway girls

Galway youngsters set a new Irish record at the recent Irish age-groups swimming championships at the National Aquatic Centre.

The Galway Swimming Club quartet of Kate Finn, Katie McKnight, Keena Walsh and Ruth Keogh set a new Irish junior record in the 4X50 freestyle relay on their way to winning the national title.

The u-17 Irish record, which was also a Connacht and senior record, was particularly special as the average age of the team is only 14.

Galway swimmers also claimed another nine national age-group titles, 11 silvers, seven bronzes, and 106 personal best times.

Bryan O’Sullivan (u-13/200 fly ), Fiona Staunton (u-14/100 breaststroke ), Kate Finn (u-13/100 backstroke ), and Keena Walsh (u-14/200 breaststroke ) were other title winners, while an u-17 Connacht record were set by Ruth Keogh (u-14/200 and 400 medley ), and David O’Sullivan (u-15 100/200 fly, 200 freestyle, which was also a Connacht u-19 and senior record.

Other podium finishes were achieved by Andrew Moore, Conor Smyth and Emer Claffey, while Oisin Duffy, Conor Snowdon, Molly O’Sullivan, Shauna Arthur, Niamh Melody, Aideen Gavin and Katie McKnight achieved notable finalist positions.
