Young Galwegians who collect empty aluminium cans stand to make some pocket money from the Department of the Environment through its Cash for Cans initiative.
Monday saw the launch of the Galway City Council’s Cash for Cans initiative. Members of the public who collect the empty aluminium cans can return them to the Sandy Road Facility between 2pm and 4pm Monday to Thursday; 2pm and 3pm on Fridays; and 9am to 1pm on Saturdays.
A receipt for €4 will be given to everyone returning a bag of approximately 100 cans and the receipt can be redeemed at City Hall, College Road. The scheme is to be run on a pilot basis for three months to allow teething problems to emerge and be sorted out.
The initiative has been welcomed by Independent councillor Catherine Connolly, who said the city council management “deserve praise for running with this initiative from the Community Forum” and that it should lead to “a significant reduction in the amount of unsightly litter on our streets, public parks, and public spaces”.
Cllr Connolly is also hoping that when the school year resumes in September that primary and secondary schools in the city will fully participate in the scheme.
